The views
Admire the stunning views of Riga's iconic church spires and the towering 368.5-meter TV tower, one of the tallest in Europe. Marvel at the National Library of Latvia, an architectural gem symbolizing the Castle of Light. Gaze at the scenic Daugava River promenade, with its five elegant bridges, Old Riga's historic charm, and the Central Market, originally Zeppelin hangars, now alive with vibrant activity and rich local culture.
The building
The observation deck is located in the historical building of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, which is a symbol of the Soviet era. It was built in honor of the Communist leader Stalin. The construction of the building began in 1951, but it was completely finished only in 1961. The building is preserved almost exactly as it was in 1961. If you look closer, you will see symbols of the Soviet era - a sickle and hammer on the walls of the central facade. The building is believed to be the first high-rise building in Latvia.

"Amazing views across Riga. Lift to 15th floor, then 2 sets of stairs. Great to see all the places we'd visited in geographical context. Some information displays, but basic. You go for the view - which is worth it!"

"An intriguing monument from the Soviet Union. They call it Stalin's birthday cake because it should have been opened on his 80th birthday. He passed away before it ever came to that. It is a similar building in Warsaw that resembles twins and was built by Stalin."

"The Latvia Academy of Sciences observation deck offers a mesmerising panoramic view over whole Riga that stretches as far as the eye can see. From a modest fee, you ascend effortlessly by elevator. It’s delightfully uncrowded, making the experience even more serene. Highly recommended."

"Amazing views over Riga. The lift takes you to floor 15 and you have to walk to floor 17. It’s very high up! There are information boards telling you about the different landmarks which was helpful (in many languages). It was interesting to just be inside such a huge Soviet building! Staff are very friendly."
"Offers the best view of Riga. Open until 22 so the most amazing sunset is possible! Bring some coffee and hang out for a while. The history of this incredible building enhances the experience - be sure to find out!"

"Definitely the best place in Riga to glimpse the city from the top. It gives a 360 degrees view of the city and its surroundings and you can stay there as long as you want. The facade of the building is astonishing and the place is very close to the central market, so a must-do detour if you visit the market."
